Maria Luz Rebecca T. Añonuevo, also known as Rebecca T. Añonuevo was born on September 18, 1965 in Manila. She currently resides in Pasig City with her husband JP Anthony D. Cuñada. She was class valedictorian when she graduated at Rizal High School, which was considered to have the most number of students in high school in the Philippines as well as in Caniogan Elementary School in Pasig when she was in elementary. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Literature as cum laude and Master’s Degree in Literature in University of Santo Tomas (UST) and received her Doctorate Degree in Literature in De La Salle University.
She was part of the University of the Philippines (UP) National Writers Workshop in 1992 and the 1992 Linangan sa Imahen, Retorika at Anyo (LIRA) Batch. She won the Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature: 2nd place for Poetry (2001), 2nd Place in Prose (2000), 3rd Place in Poetry (2000), 1st place in Poetry (1998), 2nd place in Poetry (1996), 3rd place in Children’s Fiction (1996) and lastly, 2nd place in Fiction (1995). She is a poet and author of five collections of poetry, the latest being Kalahati at Umpisa (UST Publishing House, 2008). Other titles are Saulado (UP Press, 2005), Nakatanim na Granada ang Diyos (UST Publishing House, 2001), Pananahan (Talingdao Publishing House, 1999) and Bago ang Babae (Institute of Women’s Studies, 1996). Her study on Philippine literature titled, Talinghaga ng Gana: Ang Banal sa mga Piling Tulang Tagalog ng Ika-20 Siglo (UST Publishing House, 2003), won the Gold Medal for Outstanding Dissertation at De La Salle University-Manila and the National Book Award for Literary Criticism from the Manila Critics Circle. She also writes children’s fiction, essays, and reviews. She teaches literature and writing in English, and chairs the Filipino Department at Miriam College in Quezon City.
Today, Rebecca T. Añonuevo is considered as one of the greatest authors in the Philippines.
